The bay itself is one of the most dramatic on the island — wide, west-facing, and lined with the sunset cafés that gave birth to the Balearic sound in the 1990s. Café del Mar and its neighbours still draw a crowd at dusk, but the atmosphere today is a long way from the package tourism of two decades ago.

The Coastline

• Cala Bassa: a large, sheltered bay with remarkably clear water, a beach club that draws a sophisticated crowd, and a setting that feels unmistakably Mediterranean.

The road between San Antonio and Ibiza Town passes through San Rafael, a small village with a quiet reputation among those who know the island well. Roughly equidistant between the capital and the west coast, it functions as an excellent base for guests who want to move freely across the island without committing to either end. Further north, Santa Inés (Santa Agnès) remains one of the most traditional villages on the island,  almond blossom in February, a local bar, and roads that see almost no tourist traffic.
